Default gateway

Also called: gateway

The address of the router on a host's own network, to which the host sends every packet addressed to another network.

Appears in the course and exam description (CED): 3.1.A.1

Why it matters in Unit 3

address resolution protocol (ARP) poisoning targets the ARP table on the default gateway, because the gateway delivers the traffic arriving from other networks; a poisoned table sends the target’s incoming traffic to the adversary.

Example

A laptop at 192.168.1.10 opens a website. The packet goes first to the router at 192.168.1.1, its default gateway.
