Broadcast address

The highest address of a network, such as 192.168.1.255; a packet sent to it is delivered to every device on that network.

Appears in the course and exam description (CED): 3.1.A.43.5.E.6

Why it matters in Unit 3

A smurf attack sends internet control message protocol (ICMP) requests to the broadcast address, and a sudden increase in such requests is its indicator.

Example

In 192.168.1.0/24 the broadcast address is 192.168.1.255. It is never assigned to a device.
