Local area network (LAN)

Also called: LAN

A network that covers one building or site and is controlled by one organization or household.

Appears in the course and exam description (CED): 3.1.B.23.1.B.5

Why it matters in Unit 3

Many Unit 3 attacks, such as address resolution protocol (ARP) poisoning and media access control (MAC) flooding, only work from inside the LAN, so adversaries first try to join it.

Example

The network inside one school building is a LAN. Links between a company’s offices in two cities form a wide area network (WAN).

Learn it properly, with a checkpoint Networks: hosts, packets and the devices that move them
